The root cause is a network-layer failure, not a software bug: the TLS handshake to the free translation API was reset by the peer (ConnectionResetError: [Errno 104] Connection reset by peer). Your log shows the translation channel is Google Translate (Free), and since v4.13 Google Translate is probed before use — on failure the software automatically falls back to Microsoft Translate (that is why the traceback comes from videotrans/translator/_microsoft.py). Both free endpoints were unreachable/reset in your network environment, so the translation stage aborted.

Solution (in order of priority):

  1. Fix the network route for the free channels

    • Fill in the correct proxy address in the proxy box on the right of the Alignment row of the main window, in the format http://127.0.0.1:7890 or socks5://127.0.0.1:7890. Make sure the proxy service is actually running and the port is correct; do not enter an arbitrary value.
    • On Linux, verify connectivity in the terminal first, e.g. curl -v https://edge.microsoft.com/translate/auth and curl -v https://translate.googleapis.com. If it also fails or is reset, the problem is the local network/firewall/proxy, not the software.
  2. Switch to a stable translation channel (recommended)

    • Free Google/Microsoft endpoints have rate limits and are easily interrupted. Change the translation channel to an AI channel such as DeepSeek or another AI channel, which is far more stable and gives better quality. Enter the API key in Menu → Translation Settings.
    • If you need a fully offline solution, use the local M2M100(Built-in) translation channel (the model downloads on first use).
  3. Reduce request pressure to avoid triggering the rate limits

    • Menu → Tools/Options → Advanced Options → Subtitle Translation: lower Traditional Translation Batch Size (Lines) and set Post-Translation Delay (s) to 3–5.
    • Advanced Options → General: increase Retry Attempts on Failure (e.g. 3–5) so transient resets are retried automatically.
  4. Retry the task

    • Failed translation results are not written to the translation cache (tmp/translate_cache/), so a simple rerun will re-translate. Since the speech recognition result already exists, do not check Clear Output, otherwise the time-consuming STT stage will run again.

Additional note: your video path is /run/media/dave/Data 1.1/Crafting/Polina Shoes/Part 10.mp4. It contains spaces and is on a removable mount. This does not cause the current error, but on Linux it is recommended to copy the video to a shallow directory with only English letters and digits (e.g. /home/dave/videos/part10.mp4) before processing, to avoid ffmpeg path and write-permission problems in later stages.
